Intro:
“Holy Week #2 Clearing of the Temple"
MONDAY
Matthew 21:12 ESV
And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.
Matthew 21:13 ESV
He said to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer,’ but you make it a den of robbers.”
Now He called it a den of robbers, because the merchants, in cooperation with the priests, would cheat visitors to Jerusalem by forcing them to purchase approved sacrificial animals and exchange currency at high rates.
the merchants, who in cooperation with the priests cheated visitors to Jerusalem by forcing them to purchase approved sacrificial animals and currencies at high prices
It had become a marketplace, a place of business, instead of a place to pray and seek God.
Guzik, D. (2013). Matthew (). Santa Barbara, CA: David Guzik.
Listen God does not approve of everything we do, Yes He is a loving God and we will see that in the next scripture, but He stands for righteousness.
Matthew 21:14 ESV
And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them.
I love it, he flips the tables on them and then begins to heal people.
We see here God is a God of order.
It does not mean He doesn’t love us, it just means He has to correct us when were wrong.
Matthew 21:15 ESV
But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, “Hosanna to the Son of David!” they were indignant,
So we see here these religious leaders found nothing wrong with taking advantage of people, but when Jesus begins to heal, and children praise Jesus for it, they get upset.
Matthew 21:16 ESV
and they said to him, “Do you hear what these are saying?” And Jesus said to them, “Yes; have you never read, “ ‘Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise’?”
This is why Jesus tells us we must have faith like a child.
Sometimes were to smart for our own good.
We know it all.
Matthew 21:17 ESV
And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.
